focus on an item or something and lull your mind into a relaxed state.
for any hypnosis to work though, you must
1. be willing to be hypnotized
2. believe that you can be hypnotized

I got hypnotised to quit smoking,he gave me a key word."I am a non smoker"and it seems I said it a lot!I made everyone quit smoking in my house and he gave me a relaxation tape in his voice to listen to his calming words,it would have worked if everyone respected my wishes of not smoking in my house, but, after 2 weeks,I started again!so,I feel like it is all power in your will and he did help but, with ways of supporting me and I also was given a fish tube for the fish tank to chew on,so,the $100 was used good if I would have stuck with it!

Self-hypnosis is easy. You do it all the time. Every get lost in a good book and become unaware of your surrounding. Get caught up in a good movie or TV show and shut out the whole world, you were in a state of self-hypnosis. You might not have called it that but the idea is the same. I won't try to define it. You ask 10 hypnotists for definition and you will get 10 different answers. I will tell that it is a naturally occuring state. When you practice self-hypnosis, you are just trying to induce this yourself.
Personally I like Roy Hunter's book on the topic. There are dozens and most will tell you the same thing. A trip to the library should yield at least one good book or tape (check the tape section).
There is a USENET news group devoted to hypnosis. While I DO NOT recommending visiting this group, there is a FAQs posted including one on self-hypnosis. The link to this is. He covers the subject pretty well and will answer your questions about guidelines.

I don't think it does, really. I think it's just mind over matter. If you truly want something to work, it will.

Start with a focal point or thought and progressive relaxation - tense and relax your feet, legs… etc up to your head. You should be aware of your surroundings (not asleep), but it would require a lot of effort to actually move and do anything. At this point, you're pretty much there. If you're using self-hypnosis for a specific end (like quitting smoking) that thought and desire would be your focus, and you would continue with affirming thoughts while relaxed. If its just for the experience, something else works just as well. That would be the first step. There are a lot of other things you can do with self-hypnosis, and methods to get there, but this is one of the easiest. When you're done, you can either wake yourself up - let the lethargy drain off, rather than force yourself to move or let yourself go to sleep.

Self-hyponsis is a helpful method of introspection and good precursor to sleep. It's called meditation by other people, so it's nothing very complex. Self-hyponsis is relaxing yourself through mental suggestion. Metacognition is the term for thinking about your thinking, and this is a major factor in self-hyponsis (meditation). You can focus on relaxation and imagery until the mind has temporarily more power than the body. When you arrive at that place, you can suggest things to yourself, that you can turn your desires into actions, and move toward the fulfilled person you seek to become.
